About TypingMandarin
A hands-on Chinese learning platform built on a simple idea — you remember what you type far better than what you only read.
Our Story
TypingMandarin started in 2025 out of a frustration shared by many self-taught Chinese learners: flashcards quickly become passive, video lessons fade from memory, and the gap between "I recognize this word" and "I can actually use it" never seems to close.
Typing turned out to be the missing bridge. When you type a Pinyin syllable and watch the Chinese character appear, you're combining three skills at once — recognition, recall, and motor memory. The result is a kind of learning that sticks. We built TypingMandarin to make that experience accessible to anyone, anywhere, without an install or a textbook.
Our Mission
Make Mandarin Chinese approachable for absolute beginners and rewarding for advanced learners — through interactive practice that respects your time.
We believe that learning a language is one of the most worthwhile things a person can do, and we want to remove every needless barrier between you and that goal — whether you're studying for HSK, planning a trip to China, or just exploring a culture that has fascinated you for years.
What Makes Us Different
- Type-to-learn at the core. Every lesson asks you to actively produce the language, not just recognize it. Native-speaker audio guides you, and instant feedback corrects mistakes before they harden into bad habits.
- Curriculum aligned with HSK 1–6. The 600+ chapters across the platform are organized to mirror the official Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi proficiency levels, so progress on TypingMandarin translates directly to recognized exam outcomes.
- Free where it counts. Pinyin foundations, the entire HSK 1 course, and dozens of cultural and practical mini-courses are free to anyone, with no signup required.
- Built for the long haul. We're a small, independent team. We optimize for learners' outcomes rather than engagement-at-all-costs — no streak guilt, no notification spam, no dark patterns.
The Team
TypingMandarin is built and maintained by a small team of language learners, engineers, and educators based in the United States. We've spent years studying Mandarin ourselves and have collectively passed every level of the HSK exam — which means we know firsthand both the joy and the frustration of learning this language.
We work with native-speaker editors and tutors to verify pronunciation, cultural accuracy, and pedagogical soundness for every lesson we publish.
