No — you can start right away. If no Chinese keyboard is detected, our built-in pinyin mode kicks in automatically: type the pinyin and pick the characters on screen. For the long run we still recommend enabling your system's Chinese keyboard (Windows and macOS ship with one, setup takes about two minutes — our blog has a step-by-step guide), and TypingMandarin hands over to it automatically.
