How to type Chinese with pinyin

Click the box and type pinyin without tone marks — "nihao" for 你好. Type one word at a time; for ü type the letter v, so "nv" reaches 女.

How do I type Chinese online without installing anything?
Use the keyboard box on this page. Type pinyin without tone marks (for example "nihao") and the candidate bar shows matching Chinese characters — press 1-8, press Space, or tap one to insert it. Everything runs in your browser, so there is nothing to download and no system input method to configure.
Do I need tone marks when typing pinyin?
No. Type plain letters the way Chinese input methods work: "xiexie" for 谢谢, "beijing" for 北京. For ü, type the letter v — "nv" reaches 女 and "lv" reaches 绿.
Can I type whole words and phrases at once?
Yes. The engine matches multi-syllable words, so typing "beijing" offers 北京 as a single candidate rather than making you pick two characters. Keep typing and it keeps matching the longest run it recognizes.
Does this work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Type pinyin on your normal on-screen keyboard and tap a candidate to insert it — the candidates are sized as tap targets.
Is this a real Chinese input method (IME)?
It is a browser-based pinyin input method covering everyday typing. It does not replace a full system IME with personal learning and huge dictionaries, but it needs no installation and works on any computer, including ones where you cannot change system settings.
What if I already have a Chinese keyboard installed?
Your own input method keeps working normally. When the browser reports that a system IME is composing text, this page steps out of the way and lets it handle the keystrokes.
How do I type pinyin with tone marks (nǐ, hǎo, lǜ)?
Switch to pinyin mode above the box. Type a syllable followed by its tone number and it converts to the marked form: "ni3" becomes nǐ, "hao3" becomes hǎo, "ma1 ma2 ma3 ma4" gives mā má mǎ mà. Use 5 for the neutral tone and the letter v for ü, so "lv4" becomes lǜ.
How do I type Chinese punctuation like 。，？and 《》?
Use the punctuation row under the typing box — tap any mark (。，、？！：；""（）《》) to insert it at the cursor. Chinese full-width punctuation differs from English marks, and the row works in both character and pinyin mode.
How do I learn Chinese through typing?
