Vocabulary: 300 New Words on Top of HSK 1+2
HSK 3 adds 300 new vocabulary items to the 300 you already know from the previous two levels — 600 words in total. The new vocabulary skews toward time expressions, opinions, comparisons, and complement structures (verb + result/direction). A sample of frequent reading words at this level:
| Chinese | Pinyin | English |
|---|
| 应该 | yīnggāi | should / ought to |
| 一直 | yìzhí | continuously / always |
| 其他 | qítā | other |
| 虽然 | suīrán | although |
| 但是 | dànshì | but / however |
| 关于 | guānyú | about / regarding |
| 声音 | shēngyīn | sound / voice |
| 了解 | liǎojiě | to understand |
How to Improve Reading Speed at This Level
Most candidates know enough vocabulary to pass but run out of time. The fix is character-recognition speed, not more vocabulary. Three drills that work:
- Daily 10-minute timed reading on short passages — track words-per-minute weekly.
- Flash-card the top 50 grammar words at this level (虽然, 但是, 因为, 所以, 才, 就) until you recognize them in 0.3 seconds.
- Read each passage twice: first for gist, second for detail. Mock tests show this beats slow single-pass reading by 15–20%.
- Type one passage a day in this course — typing forces character recognition that passive reading does not.
